Heard on the Street in Des Moines
"I would like to let your workers know that they are doing an excellent job. I see them working really hard cleaning up the sidewalks and keeping everything looking nice. It is really appreciated. It just makes it a nicer place to come downtown to work in."
"I was in the unfortunate circumstance last week of trying to load an old ATM machine into a pickup truck at the corner of Locust & 5th St. Needless to say, the pickup driver underestimated the weight of this ATM and even after hiring 2 young strong looking men off the street to help, we were still unable to get this thing loaded. This is where Dawn from your parking ramp on the counter came to our rescue.
We originally were asking to set the ATM in a corner until we were able to secure the proper tools and truck the next day. Dawn suggested trying to loan the machine off of the curb and when that did not work, she offer the use of ramps so that we could wheel the machine up to the bed of the pickup. After much hard work, we achieved our goal.
We could not have done this without the generous help of Dawn. Being in Iowa you always assume that people will go out of their way to assist, but it is always a great surprise and delight when it happens.
I cannot express my gratitude sufficiently to Dawn and I congratulate you for employing an individual that wants to help. She is an asset to your organization. Thank you!"
"Thank you to Operation Downtown for providing a tremendous service to the city ofDes Moinesand for employing such a compassionate, competent and caring person as [Ambassador] Dawn K.
Upon leaving theScienceCenterSaturday afternoon I was unable to find the lot where I had parked my car. After walking around in the afternoon heat, with my exhausted toddler in tow, I was fortunate enough to pass the Operation Downtown office just as Dawn was leaving work for the day.
A little embarrassed about losing my car and quite concerned about having had my little one out in the heat for so long, I approached Dawn and explained to her that I was new toDes Moines, unfamiliar with downtown, and hopelessly lost. Instead of just giving me directions and sending me on my way, after having already put in a day's work outdoors, Dawn spent at least half an hour of her own personal time walking from parking lot to parking lot in the scorching heat with my baby and me until we finally found my car.
I would not have asked nor expected Dawn to so actively demonstrate such genuine concern for us, but I was very thankful that she did. As I am sure you know, this heat we've had lately is no joke, especially for little children. Just having another soul with us - not to mention another soul who is familiar with all the downtown parking lots - was a tremendous comfort to me. Dawn should be outfitted with a golden halo and angels wings right away!"
"I have long admired the presence of the crew staff but was compelled to praise their work when, in the course of coming downtown daily at 7 AM, I have seen several workers already busy at their assigned tasks working unsupervised in inclement conditions. That is testimony to the fact that the staff take pride in their work and have good work ethics. They are clearly visible in the uniform clothing and can’t fail to serve as an example to our own residents to contribute to the cleanliness and create a good impression on visitors.
Keep up the fine work!"
"I want it to be widely known how diligently, thoroughly and friendly all the Operation Downtown workers do their work!
I have worked in the downtown area for 26 years at 6th and Walnut. I also eat and shop at many of the businesses from the East Village to the Gateway area . The sidewalks and curbsides are swept clean, the trash containers are emptied frequently and I am greeted with smiles and a friendly manner.
There are many mornings I am ashamed of the condition people leave the streets, sidewalks and parking lots after partying and socializing. Disrespectful, disgusting trails of trash, cigarette butts and damage follow most evenings and weekends. Then to see these wonderful dedicated workers cleaning up afterward, in all types of weather, is a treasure for our city!
Please pass on my compliments to all. They may not hear from anyone how they are appreciated, but they should know there are some of us out here that truly see their efforts and enjoy the results."
- Des Moines is lucky to have an ambassador like Eric! Programs and employees like this help citizens and visitors feel safe and welcomed to the area. I hope Des Moines will continue this program and have employees of Eric's dedication! If you don't have a recognition program for employees, I certainly hope you start one soon to let the employees they are appreciated.
